About the Collector

My first visit to Nepal was in 1979, when I came to climb some peaks in the Himalayas. It was the beginning of a lifelong connection with the region.

The kindness of the Himalayan people and their community spirit rooted in Buddhism brought me back to Nepal many times. Through very close friends in Kathmandu, I gained deep insight into their philosophy and the art connected with it.

Between 1979 and 1982, with the help of my local friends, I found the thangkas that are part of this collection. In those early years I bought objects mostly from Tibetan refugees in urgent need of help – often during late evenings at my friends’ house in Kathmandu.

My friends were second-generation art collectors and generously shared their expertise and connections. Early this century, mainly due to the political and social unrest in Nepal, their family decided to sell parts of their private collection. I took over several Buddha statues and other pieces at that time, many of them of great rarity.

Over more than 30 years the collection has grown to include Buddha sculptures, statues, large statues, ritual-tantric objects, ghau boxes and thangkas. Experts who have visited the collection were surprised by its range and quality.

Many of these pieces are now offered for sale. Please contact me by phone or email for any inquiry or for additional photos and details.
