Large Tibetan & Nepalese Buddhist Statues

With the opening of the Kingdom of Nepal in 1951 and the closing of Tibet after the events of 1959, Himalayan art, both antique and newly crafted, won high appreciation worldwide. It is remarkable how many cultural treasures of Northern Buddhism, generally known as Lamaism, have survived from their long history.

Large statues from Tibet and Nepal are usually kept in Himalayan monasteries and seldom find their way into private collections, museums or exhibitions in the West. The large statues shown below are therefore truly exceptional. Some are most probably unique worldwide.

Thanks to my friend’s family’s strong connections with local artists, I am able to present a unique and outstanding collection of large statues. The artists created them with outstanding craftsmanship, closely following the canonical rules, and both Nepali and Tibetan forms of expression are beautifully illustrated.

Some pieces must be unique worldwide, such as the Yamantaka statues (the large one and the one made of silver). I would also like to highlight the four Chatur Maharajas, the guardians of Mount Meru, all executed in solid casting. Gilded pieces are finished with the traditional Nepalese fire-gilding technique, reflecting great artistic dedication. Many are solid cast copper.
