Bhairava, the fierce manifestation of Shiva, is a guardian figure especially venerated by the Newars of the Kathmandu Valley, where his masks appear in festivals and at shrine entrances. This mask shows the classic wrathful face: bulging eyes, a third eye, bared fangs and a crown of skulls, with ornamented ear flaps. It appears to be worked in metal with remains of gilding. Height 37 cm.
