Virupa is one of the 84 mahasiddhas of Indian tantric Buddhism, celebrated for halting the sun with a gesture to settle his wine bill, and is the founding master of the Sakya Lamdre tradition. True to this legend, the corpulent figure sits at ease with his right arm raised, pointing to the sky. He wears jewellery and a short dhoti and is seated on a lotus base; the surface appears to be gilt. Height 42 cm.
